Local store has global market

More Taste Than Money also eBay drop-off site

Talking Shop with Gina Rosenberg, owner of More Taste Than Money. The consignment store selling furniture and home accessories was born more than two years ago when Rosenberg discovered her destiny.

"I absolutely believe that it was fate for me to own this store. It was meant to be. I said it aloud that I wanted a business on McGregor and call it More Taste Than Money and 20 minutes later it happened. You ask for a sign and you can't pass that one up, you know. I was able to parlay a love of shopping and decorating into a business."

More Taste Than Money also operates as an eBay drop-off site. Gina's husband David Rosenberg, AKA Internet Guy, runs the eBay side of the business.

"With eBay we have opened up a worldwide market. Almost half of what we sell on eBay is going out of the country. If the economy is not that good here, it doesn't matter because we can sell it somewhere else," said Rosenberg. "We have 100 percent positive feedback and we're PowerSellers on eBay."

The store is at 13101 McGregor Boulevard in Fort Myers, near the intersection of Cypress Lake Drive. Call 590-9888.

What items are flying off the shelf?
The sofa tables, console tables and buffets are always in demand. Right now, I've got more furniture going out than coming in. A lighting store went out of business and we have lots of brand new lamps with the tags still attached. We sell a ton of artwork, both original artwork and pretty pictures. Customers have come to know the store as a place to find something different.

What is the best buy from More Taste Than Money this week?
I have an absolutely stunning Henredon dining room set with eight chairs, a leaf and custom pads. It is selling for $3,000 and was close to $8,000 new.

Who is your typical customer?
It's amazing. It's not who you think it would be. There are as many men as women. My typical shopper truly is someone with more taste than money. They want something nice without having to pay a lot for it.

What is unique about your store?
The eclectic mix of furniture and accessory items. People come in and even if they don't find what they're looking for, they enjoy looking around. We greet everybody and stand back and let them have fun.

What other stores do you like to shop in besides More Taste Than Money?
I shop at all the other consignment stores. Even before I bought this store I shopped consignment because they have the unique and unusual and not the same old stuff.

What are you doing to survive the downturn in the economy?
We've adjusted our contract and our terms. We're doing a lot more networking and more word of mouth advertising.

What is the No. 1 thing you have learned about business?
You just have to keep a positive attitude, smile and stay happy.

How has technology changed the way you do business?
Oh, from the time that we bought the business we've gone to a point-of-sale system that cut about 20 hours of work a week. We research items on the Internet to find out what something is worth and help customers get a better price.

What new business would you open tomorrow if you could?
I've always wanted to have a bed and breakfast. I would love to decorate each room with a different theme. But I love the store because I get to talk to people and help them find what they need. If I don't have it I usually know where to go and get it.
