Meet Jane Lopez Of Beltone Hearing Care Center
________________________________________________________________________

Jane Lopez has been testing for and fitting hearing instruments for over 35 years. She started in Washington DC and Baltimore, when they still made house calls, and moved to Southwest Florida in 1984.

She had been working in head start education for immigrants, but was talked into interviewing to fit hearing aids because someone said she’d enjoy it. Instead, she loved it. “It was a combination of everything I knew how to do”.

Today her son and daughter are with her in the business. Her receptionist, alter-ego, and sidekick, Phyllis, has been with her for over 20 years, and it’s spooky how well they work together.

This writer wears hearing aids, and it is a pleasure to sit in Jane’s office and see how well she handles the people, the instruments and the technology. If you had to pick one word it would be tough to chose between friendly and meticulous or thorough. Particularly interesting was a discussion of Analog vs. Digital for a 94 year-old in search of replacements. There were a lot of things Jane told the lady she didn’t need.

And don’t be mislead by the lady’s age. Jane works well with all ages, but is seeing more and more younger people. About half the population over 65 have some usually treatable hearing loss, but the numbers are higher for the baby boomers.

How well you hear affects almost everything you do, and for this active group that means jobs, hobbies, home life, music – in other words, Lifestyle. Hearing loss, and it doesn’t have to be severe, can also have some ugly side-effects: Anxiety, Depression, Anger, Paranoia, and Social Isolation. Just watch some old couples.

Hearing screenings, on the other hand, are free, painless, non-invasive, and relatively quick – about half an hour to see if there is a loss. And yes, some people are glad to learn it’s just their ears, not Alzheimer’s or a stroke that’s keeping them from understanding. A more intensive screening actually measures hearing through the air, bones, and a combination of both.

Instruments… Where can one start. It is just about impossible to buy a bad instrument. Because today low end aids often excel the top end of three years ago. Modern aids even come with remote controls and blue-tooth capabilities. If you qualify for open fit aids, you can be screened, fitted and take a “test drive” in the office the same day you come in. And, yes, they’re almost invisible.

Jane is BCHIS (nationally) and ACA (advanced national) certified and highly skilled working with and repairing most brands. And, she can answer your questions! Give her a call. Say “Hello,” to Phyllis.
