MEET TOM CAVALIER
OF BUSINESS MEASUREMENT QUICKBOOKS PRO ADVISORS
|
Tom hails from Tonawanda, New York, which is halfway between
Niagara Falls and Buffalo. He and his wife moved to Fort Myers in 2003.
Following a formal education in advertising art and industrial
design, he took a job in Niagara Falls at Moore Business Forms
where they printed the first NY State Lottery tickets.
From there, Tom went into the insurance industry as an agent for
Metropolitan Life Ins., moved up to Allstate, and then to the
Independent Agency system spanning a 21 year period, 5 of which
was an Agency owner.
Upon selling his agency, he bought two insurance restoration
franchises, one in Buffalo and the other in Syracuse. When the
time was right, he sold them and went into business consulting
in the early 90's.

After selling small business consulting (part time) for a large international
firm in Chicago for four years, he learned that almost every business had the
same set of problems. Although he sold a lot of consulting hours, he just
wasn't comfortable that the clients he sold were actually getting good
results. It was his job to analyze a company's systems, controls and
procedures, and in over four years, he had analyzed over 400 companies. Almost
none were doing job costing.
Having used QuickBooks to run his Insurance Restoration companies, he knew he
could have helped many of the companies that he had analyzed by using
QuickBooks for a lot less than the consulting company was charging, so he
decided to open his own consulting company early in 1999. He named it Business
Measurement with the slogan, "In Business, you cannot Manage what you cannot
Measure." This slogan is what sets Business Measurement QuickBooks Pro Advisors
apart from their competition.
He became one
of the first Certified QuickBooks Pro-Advisors in the country in 1999 and
learned very early on that consulting services is not an easy sell.
There is probably less than 2% of all business owners that feel that there
could possibly be anybody that could run their business better than they can.
The three excuses that he heard most often were, "we're different, the local
economy is horrible, and, the only way I could get a good employee is if I
could clone myself."
He quickly became an expert in using QuickBooks for management, and gained
consulting clients buy earning their trust working with their QuickBooks.
There are now over 50,000 certified Pro-Advisors of which over 90% are
accountants. Tom is not. He is a Management Accounting expert.

Recently, Intuit, the makers
of QuickBooks, has decided to go after the mid-market businesses and
recognized that very few of their Pro-Advisors were capable of handling
these types of accounts. They decided to select about 500 of their Pro
Advisors to become Intuit Solution Providers. Tom is now the Intuit
Solution Provider for Southwest Florida. Business Measurement is
staffed by 5 Pro-Advisors, and as of the first of the year, they have
opened an accounting and tax preparation division and a technical services
division which features website hosting, design and maintenance. |
Tom turned 19
just a month after marrying his wife, Sharon. They attended both of their high
school junior and senior proms together, and celebrated their 42nd Anniversary
in November of 2008. Thet have two sons and a daughter, and four
grandchildren. Their oldest son, Tom Jr. manages an industrial seal company in
the Buffalo area, their other son, Mike, went straight from high school to the
Air Force and is now a Master Sergeant stationed at the Northeast Air Defense
Sector (NEADS) in Rome, NY. Their daughter Tricia, is the Executive Assistant
for retired Hall of Fame Buffalo Bills Quarterback, Jim Kelly.
Over the years, Tom has spent spent a great deal of his time putting back into
the community working with youth groups including Boy Scouts, little league
baseball, football and softball, the local Boys Club, a Buffalo street hockey
program, grammar school boys and girls baseball, softball and basketball, and
high school baseball. Currently, he serves on the curriculum committee for
Edison College, the Fort Myers Beach Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors,
and is the president of one of the area's oldest business networks, the
Business Network of SWFL. He is also one of six members of a group called the
Entrepreneur's Forum that offers free seminars for small business owners.
Tom and his wife enjoy traveling themselves,
but the real thrill is sending their grandkids tickets to Florida.
His goal for the business is to get it so well staffed and
systematized that he can spend 8 weeks every year in the
Caribbean. So far he only takes four.
