Mark Smith was born in Lakeland, Florida and lived two years in Wauchula, Florida before moving to North Fort Myers, where he attended J Colin English Elementary, Dunbar Middle School and North Fort Myers High School, where he graduated 1976.

He attended The University of Florida from September 1976 until August of 1980, and was the last class to graduate in Alligator Alley.

After graduation from The University of Florida, Mark attended National College of Chiropractic in Lombard, Illinois and graduated in April 1985.

Mark's interest in chiropractic began after hurting his back while working on his parent's farm. He was lifting fertilizer bags onto a spreader and strained his back. He was treated by Dr. Sam Watkins, and after several treatments the pain and stiffness were resolved. This was his family's first experience with chiropractic.

Several years later, while at a religious retreat, the minister asked him what he wanted to do with his life. They began trading stories and the incident with his back injury and his chiropractic experience with Dr. Watkins came up. The minister explained that she had been in a major car accident destroying both knees, and that chiropractic care kept her walking and getting around.

Things coming full circle, after graduating from chiropractic school, Dr. Smith began practicing as an associate of Dr Sam Watkins, the very person that introduced him to chiropractic! A short time later, Dr. Smith and  Dr. Shelly Dranko opened Associates in Chiropractic and practiced together until 1991.  Dr. Smith then went into private practice and worked with other area doctors practicing chiropractic, performing Manipulation Under Anesthesia and providing follow up therapy to their patients.

Being an innovator and seeing a need for patients to receive to receive a full range of services from a primary care provider, Dr. Smith started Island Coast Pain and Rehabilitation Associates in 1999.  Together with Dr. Walter Flesner III, DO., Island Coast Pain and Rehabilitation Associates provides the best of all worlds,  with both allopathic medicine and chiropractic medicine under one roof. As Dr. Smith puts it, "We are a one stop Doc shop, treating both medical and physical medicine conditions as a full family practice and spinal practice with the ability to utilize muscle relaxers and anti inflammatory medications as well as adjustment to the spine."

Dr. Flesner specializes in Family Practice. He was in private practice for 16 years before joining the Staff of Nova Southeastern University as an adjunct professor of Family practice running the student clinic and mentoring the student interns. Dr. Flesner joined Island Coast Pain & Rehabilitation in December 2005 assuming the role of Medical Director.  In addition to family practice, Dr. Flesner completed a mini fellowship in pain management and currently treats chronic and acute pain patients as well.

Both are also very interested and active in weight loss and diet.  They are seeing tremendous results from the Take Shape For Life program, not only in weight loss, but through proper diet their patients are literally getting off their blood pressure medications, sugar medication and insulin, and providing immediate, positive impact on the quality of their patients’ lives.

Dr. Smith is affiliated with South Florida Masons For Children’s Charities. He is also an avid fisherman and hunter.
